Aletheia Detailed Track

The dotted red lines either side of the grey show the result of a 1-sigma error.
That is, there is a 65% chance the actual path will not shift outside the limits shown by these lines.

On 2003 Sep 29 UT, the 178 km diameter asteroid (259) Aletheia will occult a 11.4 mag star in the constellation Sagittarius for observers along a path across New Zealand.

NOTE: This event is very favourably placed for the South Island of New Zealand and the south of the North Island. Currently all of Southland, Otago, Canterbury and Wellington lie within the path whose uncertainty is rather less than one path width. Photoelectric, video or CCD sites which lie within the path include Christchurch, Mt John and Alexandra, with Blenheim very close to the northern limit. Although the event will be at a relatively low altitude, we expect a significant effort to capture a result.

In the case of an occultation, the combined light of the asteroid and the star will drop by 1.9 mag to 13.1 mag (the magnitude of the asteroid) for at most 9.0 seconds.

This update is based on UNSO/Flagstaff astrometry for the asteroid kindly provided by Ron Stone, TMO astrometry for the asteroid kindly provided by Bill Owen, historical astrometry from the MPC files (via AstDys), and the following catalogs for the star position: UCAC.
