Vesta Update Map


On 2006 Mar 29 UT, the 468 km diameter asteroid (4) Vesta will occult a 10.2 mag star in the constellation Gemini for observers along a very wide path which covers most of New South Wales and southern Queensland and the North Island of New Zealand. The southern limit of the path passes just south of Sydney and near Wellington. The northern limit runs just north of Moreton Bay.

In the case of an occultation, the combined light of the asteroid and the star will drop by only 0.1 mag to 7.8 mag (the magnitude of the asteroid) for as long as 33.0 seconds.

This update is based on UNSO/Flagstaff astrometry for the asteroid kindly provided by Ron Stone, historical astrometry from the MPC files (via AstDys), and the following catalogs for the star position: UCAC.
