Vesta Update Map


On 2010 Feb 10 UT, the 547 km diameter asteroid (4) Vesta will occult a 9.7 mag star in the constellation Leo for observers along a very wide path beginning over New Zealand in morning twilight, between Hastings and Christchurch. Then in Australia across the coast from just north of Rockhampton to Port Macquarie in the South. Moving north-west over Longreach and Winton, before ending over Darwin. Note low magnitude drop 0.04.

In the case of an occultation, the combined light of the asteroid and the star will drop by 0.0 mag to 6.2 mag (the magnitude of the asteroid) for at most 49.7 seconds.

This update is based on UNSO/Flagstaff astrometry for the asteroid kindly provided by Alice Monet, TMO astrometry for the asteroid kindly provided by Bill Owen, historical astrometry from the MPC files (via AstDys), and the following catalogs for the star position: UCAC.
