The RASNZ Occultation Section co-ordinates the observation of occultations of stars by minor planets. While in the past successful observations have typically involved one or two observers on an occasional basis, now much more accurate predictions mean that many more observers (if they are prepared to travel) have the potential to see a particular event. That raises the need for better co-ordination amongst observers in order to maximise the value of data obtained.

For this reason the Occultation Section has instituted a system of regional co-ordinators whose role is to:

• Maintain contact with observers in their region and provide assistance as required;
• For high-profile events, direct observers with portable equipment to locations where their observations will be of maximum value. This means helping select locations where no two observers will be timing the same chord across the asteroid;
• For events where many observations are likely to be reported, act as a first point of contact to ensure that all relevant data is reported by each observer. (i.e. that report forms are filled out correctly, and by each observer, even when no occultation has been observed);
• Promote important events (together with observing methods and other relevant details) to local astronomical societies and other potential observers within their region.
